As a rule of thumb, defendants in New Jersey Municipal Court proceedings should wear business casual attire at a minimum. Municipal Court is a solemn and dignified environment. The court is presided over by a judge, who will make decisions affecting your life, liberty and freedom. Judges can assess an array of fines, send people to jail, suspend driving privileges, and more. In court, judges wear robes, lawyers wear suits, and the police officers wear uniforms. Thus, defendants in court proceedings should similarly wear clothing that demonstrates a level of respect towards the court and the people operating it. By doing so, they give themselves the best opportunity for a favorable outcome in their case.
